Aromatherapy is the art of using
volatile essential oils extracted from; leaves, stems, fruits,
woods, resin and flowers of plants and trees in a way that can
positively affect emotional, mental and physical health. Therefore
the mind, body and spirit are treated via aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy involves both the inhalation off aromas, and the
dermal absorption (via massage) of the herbs to achieve the desired
outcome.
History
As far
back as 18,000B.C flowers, plants and their essence have been used
for relaxation, healing and energising. Aromatherapy was used by
extremely ancient civilisations such as Egypt, China, India, Ancient
Greece and Rome and is believed to be at least 6000 years old.
Ancient Egyptians used specific plant extracts and scents for
religious rituals, as certain smells could raise concentration
and promote a state of tranquillity. Frankincense was burned at
dawn as an offering to the sun and myrrh burned for the moon. Oils
of cedarwood, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and myrrh were also used
to embalm the dead, the scent of which remained in tombs for many
years after the ceremony.
The art of aromatherapy spread to Ancient Greece and Rome where
oils were used for aromatic massages and in daily baths. It is
thought that the Greeks obtained their knowledge of the oils from
the Egyptians. They used them for medical and cosmetic purposes.
The powerful benefits linked with essential oils were stressed
in the fourteenth century when the Black Death hit, killing millions
of people. Herbal preparations were used extensively during this
time to fight the terrible plague. It is believed that some perfumeries
may have avoided death by their constant contact with the natural
aromatics.
